After fixing several thousand PSP's over the years I've come across just
about every problem you can run into with them which lets me offer the
kits below with confidence. These are for simple PSP repairs and will solve
the most common PSP problems mentioned. Each kit comes with
everything a person needs to do the job and no prior experience with
electronics is required at all. They're also fully refundable if needed.
Not all PSP repairs are listed as many do need a professional's touch but all
the kits listed are well tested and proven safe to perform at home. Each kit
also comes with a 'mid-repair bail-out' option too. This means that if you
get stuck on something or just plain change your mind you can always
package it all up as-is and mail it in for me to finish the repair. This doesn't
happen very often but if it does the price paid for the kit will come off my
standard repair fee so price-wise it's a no-lose situation.
- ALL KITS ARE AT LEAST 95% CERTAIN TO SOLVE THE PROBLEMS MENTIONED AND ARE
100% REFUNDABLE IF THEY DON'T - SO AT WORST YOU'RE JUST OUT FOR THE POSTAGE.
- ALL PARTS SUPPLIED WITH THE KITS ARE A GUARANTEED PERFECT FIT BECAUSE THEY ALL
COME OUT OF STANDARD FACTORY PSP'S JUST LIKE YOURS.

DAMAGED / BROKEN UMD DRIVE SYMPTOMS
- Games take forever to load or don't load at all
- "game cannot be read" message after a long load time.
- Games freeze temporarily or freeze and cut off.
NOTE: THERE ARE A FEW THINGS TO CHECK BEFORE ORDERING...
Check first that the UMD game itself isn't causing the problem - they have to be clean and scratch-free just like normal CD's and the outer plastic case needs to be intact as well. Make sure the clear plastic circles are up exactly even with the white plastic part all the way around on both sides. Heavy-duty replacement cases are available on the PSP parts page if needed.
Check that the UMD trigger isn't at fault - a small spinning circle should pop up in the bottom right hand corner of the screen the moment you load a game or movie. If there's no spinning circle or it's flickering off and on it means you need a new trigger or possibly there's a problem with the UMD door or rear casing. A PSP-1001 model has only one UMD trigger just to the left of the center spindle - a tiny black or white plastic lever sticking up through a hole int the drive tray. A PSP-2001 or 3001 has that plus a secondary UMD trigger as shown - it's hard to see but there should be a tiny black post sticking straight up out of the silver or black box in the bottom right hand corner of the drive area and if it's bent or broken the PSP doesn't know there's a game loaded at all. Check for the door tab that presses down on it too.
If the game is stopping mid-way and the "Do you want to quit the game?" message pops up it means you either have a trigger/UMD door/rear casing problem as above or a damaged button bar is to blame. The button bar has the "HOME" button on it and the message above is what you get when you press it as well as when you open the UMD door and the triggers are no longer pressed.
NOTE: If you're getting the "game cannot be read" message immediately upon inserting a game it always means a motherboard problem rather than the UMD drive.

The analog assembly is one of the most important parts of a PSP and it's also usually the first one to wear out. Pretty much every video game ever made uses the analog or joystick to move the characters around during game play so they invariably get a lot of (sometimes rather rough), use. If your analog joystick is grinding or getting stuck in one position this is definitely what you need.
These kits come with original Sony brand analog assemblies which have been taken out of PSP's purchased for parting out purposes. This is the only way to get a real Sony analog assembly as they aren't sold separately by Sony or anyone else at all. Sony brand assemblies offer the very best quality and smooth control you can get. They're for people that are serious about their gaming and want the absolute best and most durable assembly there is - not a $5 knock-off like you see on ebay. Stock is limited and these kits are available only when I have more assemblies than I need for my own mail-in and local repairs. If they're shown here as out-of-stock you can always send the console in for professional repair and get the exact same top quality part.
** Due to the nature of the off and on supply of these items this webpage is updated almost every day so if I don't have any in stock today please check back tomorrow. Thank you, Lynn Brown

PSP-1000 PSP-2001

By far the most common do-it-yourself repair and really not very difficult at all when you start with the entire assembly rather than just the LCD screen by itself. Proper instructions however are just as important in this instance and I see the results almost every day of the damage done by people just diving in without finding good directions beforehand. The LCD screen is a separate component directly underneath the outer clear PSP screen. Usually the LCD screen will be cracked and the outer plastic screen won't show any damage at all which can be confusing. There are pictures of what most broken LCD screenslook like though some just show a lot of vertical lines, a totally black screen or occasionally a partial grey or black screen. In any case though no matter how it's broken replacing the entire LCD screen assembly will solve the problem. Please note though there are no PSP-3001 LCD screen kits as they're literally paper-thin sheets of glass and therefore way too easy to break for a beginner.

D-I-Y PSP POWER SWITCH PCB REPLACEMENT KIT

original Sony power switch PCB as shown, tools and instructions.

NOTE: PSP power problems are rarely caused by a bad power switch. This kit is for replacing the existing power switch PCB when the internal sliding switch is broken off, loose, worn out, or otherwise physically damaged. Under normal circumstances you can feel that the outer plastic sliding switch is connected to something inside and when you pull it down to put the PSP on "button hold" you can feel a small internal "click" into place. Please check the PSP power problems page for further information regarding the various types and causes of PSP power problems if the outer plastic sliding switch isn't obviously sliding free rather than making internal contact.
PSP-1001 models have the pressure pads for the X/O/triangle/square buttons on the power switch PCB as well as the internal power switch. These do often wear out and either stop responding or act as though the button's pressed all the time. Assuming your buttons aren't physically stuck up or down by something sticky around the external buttons replacing this item will almost always solve this problem too.

If you can't turn the volume up or down, the HOME button isn't responsive, or the backlight, mute, select, or start button won't work this is most likely what you need. The most common problem is when the PSP pops up with the "Do you want to quit the game?" message in the middle of gameplay for no reason. If that's the problem you're looking to fix though check the UMD drive section above before ordering anything as a damaged/fouled UMD trigger or a loose/broken UMD door can cause the exact same problem. If your door is intact and well fitted though and you can see for sure that the trigger(s) are OK too there's a very good chance replacing the button bar will take care of the unwanted "quit the game" problem.

NOTE: Charging problems are normally due to a bad charger socket only if you can see clearly from the outside that it's physically broken or there's something permanently jammed inside. If this is the case with your PSP this kit will definitely take care of the problem but if it looks OK chances are you have a blown fuse, bad battery, or broken charger.

DO-IT-YOURSELF PSP MAIN CABLE REPLACEMENT KIT

The main cable in a PSP-1001 is the data cable that connects the power switch PCB to the motherboard and the top end serves as the R-trigger pressure pad. It's very rare for a main cable to cause a power problem but if your R-trigger isn't functioning properly this is most likely what you need. It's the same for a PSP-2001 but in this instance the main cable also serves as the pressure pad for the X/O/square/triangle buttons as well. It is easily damaged and prone to wearing out with a lot of use so if any of these buttons aren't working right in your PSP 2001 this is almost always the cause.

D-I-Y PSP DIRECTIONAL PAD (ARROWS) REPLACEMENT KIT

original Sony brand directional pad as shown, with tools and instructions.

The directional pad in both models serve as the pressure pad for the up/down/left/right arrow buttons and the L-trigger as well. These often wear out and are also prone to damage so if any of these buttons aren't functioning correctly this is pretty much always the cause. The PSP-2001 model directional pad also has the memory card slot cover attached so order one for your PSP color as well as model. You can easily swap it out with your existing slot cover though too if you prefer.

PSP-1001 MODEL - UMD DOOR & FRAME REPLACEMENT KIT
- Includes one
reinforced after- market UMD door and metal UMD holder as shown, tools and instructions.
This is a very straightforward repair as it's pretty obvious whether you need a new UMD door or not. There is quite a bit of PSP dis-assembly involved though and you can't just pop the old door out and put a new one in as there are internal security screws preventing this from happening. Armed with the right tools and instructions though it's not a big deal at all and this kit comes with both the external black plastic UMD door and the metal UMD frame that sits inside of it. Unfortunately I can't get enough of the original Sony outer black plastic UMD doors to cover my mail-in repairs as well as the kits here but I have located the best quality after-market UMD doors available and reinforced the latching mechanism on them to do away with the door latching problems associated with these items. They're guaranteed to fit perfectly as is the original Sony metal UMD frame/holder shown to the right. This is what you need if your games tend to get stuck inside the console.
