As always, there are pro's and con's to take into consideration deciding what to do. All the repairs I do myself come with
a lot more than just whatever new parts are needed. Each PSP is thoroughly cleaned inside and out. This cuts down on
the chances or needing future repairs due to all the lint and grit that get in there and jam up the laser gears and what
not. I also clean all the contacts and check the whole console over for tell-tale signs of problems to come so you have
the option to get them taken care of now for a few bucks rather than later on when it turns into a major problem. The
down side though is that you do have to package your PSP up and mail it to me. Allowing a couple days for the job to get
done then transit time back home it all adds up to quite a few days with no game to play with and the cost of packaging
and postage.
Doing the job yourself means your PSP won't get quite the thorough going over that I do but I have included with the kit
a few things you can easily do yourself to ward off future problems and save some serious money down the track. You
won't have to make a trip to the post office, pay for postage, or have your expensive console out of your sight at all
which is always a consideration. I do know that the idea of working on something so foreign to most folks can be a bit
daunting but I have an answer for that also. I have several PSP repair kits available on the website and all of them
come with a 'mid-repair bail-out option' which means you can change your mind right in the middle of it and let me
handle it from there. This is a rare occurrence but it means that at worst it's as if you sent it to me in the first place. The
price paid for the kit will come off the standard repair fee so you'll only be out for the added postage.
There's more info below on the kits and how to go about getting one. Please keep in mind there are now three different
models of PSP, all requiring a different type of screen, so it's very important to find out first which model you have.
There's a square sticker in the battery compartment and the model number is at the top. The original older model PSP
'fats' will show PSP-1001 and the newer PSP Slims are either PSP-2001 or 3001. Sometimes there's no sure you pick
the right item and please note there won't be any PSP-3001 screen kits. A 3001 LCD screen is literally paper thin and
I'm not going to encourage anyone to replace these at home as they're far easier to break than the 1001/2001 LCD
screens. To have us handle the repair instead go to the PSP Repair requests page for further information and
instructions.

A broken LCD screen is a very common problem but almost always fairly easy to fix. Sony
doesn't cover it under warranty as their thinking goes if the screen's cracked the PSP must
have been abused in some way. I offer the replacement services as above and there's a
do-it-yourself kit for the 1001's and 2001's at the bottom of this page. When the LCD screen
is broken in a PSP it usually has the "spider web" type cracks and it's obvious there's a
serious problem. The LCD screen though is a separate item underneath the outer clear plastic
screen so even though it's cracked to pieces you won't be able to feel the cracks from the
outside. Some LCD screens break in such a way that you just get lines running down it, some
are black on one side, some just don't come on at all, and quite often they'll cause a short so
the whole console will only turn on for a split second and shut back off again. No matter how
it's broken though replacing the whole assembly will take care of it. Sometimes the
underlying motherboard also gets damaged but fortunately that's rare.
